Here is where the deep thought came in...I would love to know the amount of money we have saved by no longer purchasing paper towels, paper napkins and ziploc baggies. I do not think we would be able to go to Hawaii on those savings, but hey maybe that dinner out with friends was paid for by limiting out runs to Target for paper products.
So, if you think people like me are crazy for cutting out the paper products, don't. I promise you are not even adding one whole additional load of laundry to your week, maybe a half, I mean seriously how big are a few cloth napkins and four sack towels? Just toss them right in...oh and you save on purchasing more garbage bags too! See, it just keeps getting better! And the savings on lunch baggies. Those evil plastic non bio degradable, natural resource sucking petroleum based ziploc life zappers...well, they are expensive! (that fantastic description was provided by the Hubs.)

I totally agree...it is amazing what is wasted with paper towels and napkins! I am sure over a year it is a huge savings...I have never figured it out! I always tell friends...if they want to reduce their expenses...stop using paper towel and paper napkins! Some look at me like I am crazy!
ReplyDeleteI once was on a un-paper kick even bought dozens of flannel to use as facial tissue and since we cloth diaper I thought what the hey the whole family can use cloth wipes. I don't know what happened between then and five years later but we have gotten into the bad paper and plastic baggie habit. Thanks for the reminder and that's on my to-do list to get all of that out of the boxes and start making some real changes in this household!
ReplyDeleteI never realized how much paper we were wasting until I just spent $12 on 3 pks of dish cloths from the store and stopped buying paper towels. I've only bought a single 3pk of paper towels in over 9 months. After I got frustrated with having to go to the cabinet every time I wanted a wipe, I bought 3 wicker baskets from target's $1 section and put one in the family room, one in the dining room and one in the kitchen. Quick, easy and according to my girlfriends, brilliant. I've converted a friend as well and she set herself up in the same way. Her son dropped a cup of juice and she ran to the kitchen for a paper towel. She came back with a confused face while I was already wiping it up and told her not to worry about it lol. We still use plastic baggies because with the small amount of them that we use, it's not a big deal to us, we use them mostly for freezer items and I have a few cloth sandwich bags for the rare occasions I need them. Once my girls start school and take lunches, I'll probably get more cloth bags. Since I already cloth diaper and mama cloth, the extra laundry isn't a big deal at all. Love the savings from not buying paper towels, pads and diapers!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much you can save. We've even went toilet paper free and using family cloth after using cloth diapers! Just didn't make sense for just one member of our family to do it, why not all of us? :)
